Grey Lynn festival is one of those events that seems to mark the beginning of summer in Auckland. This year we shared a wee stall with the lovely Sandra Tyler, who used to run our Kingsland store and is the weaver behind Dreamweaver beautiful hand loomed wraps and capes. During the last year of Lindsay’s life with us, Dan documented her journey through cancer in one of his classic pen and ink journals. Those of you who came to see Lindsay during her tangi, or attended her service may have seen this book – some of you even wrote your own messages to her in it.

Even the book itself is rich in whakapapa – it was originally one of Dan’s great grandfather’s ledgers from his farm in Te Aroha, circa 1919.

This precious taonga has been included in the exhibtion “Kia Ora Koutou.. Kia Ora Koutou.. Kia Ora Koutou..” a collaborative installation of small prints and works on paper, curated by Alexis Neal and Janeen Love, which is on at Artstation on Ponsonby Road until the 22nd of October.

Dan has a selection of other works on show also – an installation of 14 volumes of his journals from 2004 – 2010, and three editions of hard-ground etchings, which are for sale for $125 per print, unframed.

The show also features print work from 19 other artists. The prints are  arranged in a poutama form across three walls of the gallery. These are being sold on a “cash and carry” basis (ie you pull the one you want off the wall and take it) – so the installation will shift and change over the course of the show. The prices for the prints range from $75 – $350 so there’s something there for everyone. A great way to kick off your christmas shopping!

We have been taking a break to get ourselves back together so we can get on with being Fabulous again! Which is just what Linz would want us to be. So here we go!!

the latest NZ feature to hit the box office is Matariki, co-written and directed by our mate Michael Bennett.

Its a gritty and engaging story of several very different characters whose lives cross over each other unexpectedly following a catastrophic event one night in South Auckland.

The multiple plotlines are woven deftly together, overlapping at times in clever ways and suprising you more than once.

It stars a bunch of great actors, and a couple of fresh young performers – first time on film styles – who are amazing. Oh yeah and there’s this dog who I think will be in line for the academy award for best supporting animal.

Props too to Alun Bollinger who shot the film beautifully. Both visually and emotionally the film is vibrant and energetic, rich and engaging. Its definitely worth more than a tuesday night movie ticket – you could go downtown on a Saturday night, and even pay for parking and still feel enriched by the experience.

So why are we plugging a movie on our blog? Well in the style of 100% NZ made art its been done on a shoestring so theres no promo budget, so we’re trying to get the word out there. Rona made Michael a custom Matariki signature shirt to wear to all the premieres, so theres lots of love all round.
